I originally toyed with this idea in a single frame image, but I wanted to expand on it from the start. So, I got this comic from XBC9. Aside from coloring, this was another excuse to experiment with the brushes and stamps in my art program. I think it came out fine. I was a little worried that the very detailed nature of the brush effects might clash with the more cartoony foreground, but it really doesn't draw that much attention because the foreground is so eyecatching.
One problem I ran into is that the brush-set I use doesn't have leaves as brushes, just trees. The trees are all brushed in one color, so you get green trunks as well as green leaves. This isn't much of a problem if it's in the far background, but when used closer like this, I had to do some work to hide the trunks behind people, or off panel. I don't think you can even tell, so it worked out here. Still need to experiment more and see what I can do with them. Though, I'd like to find some more brushes that can just do leaves specifically so I can not have to worry about hiding trunks. But my program sees less common use than some others, so it's harder to find brushes for things.
Oh, well.
