Last year I tried to make a habit of doing a background-focused art study every Sunday. I stuck to it for a good 9 months or so before losing steam. I'm not really sure why I haven't gotten around to uploading some of them here, so I compiled a few of my favorites. Most are based on photo reference I got from friends/twitter/google or took myself but a few were done purely from imagination.

I just like the top left one because I had way too much fun painting that big stupid dumb idiot fish. The characters in the middle two came from previous drawings I'd done and I'll probably draw more of them in the future ^^
