Concerns for the Soldier...commission
BuckHopper commissioned me to continue his Swamp Mare in another scene. In Bucks own words But in my mind, the two aren't related. He's from the swamp, too, and has had a hard life. His alcoholic father was so abusive, he spent as much time away from the house as possible and shacking up with anyone he could through adolescence. Often he stayed with Equina in her trailer, who always liked the colt's company. When he was old enough, he signed up and went off to fight whatever war a swamp horse might get into-- Either way, he's been at infantry duty seeing combat. This moment is his first relief from service, back for a few weeks rest before he goes back again, and the first person he went to see was the sweet swamp mare that took always looked out for him. She's delighted to see him, sees how tired and dirty he is (he had to find his own way from the base to the swamp), they talk about all that's happened until he falls asleep, unable to stay awake, his body's so worn out.
So, I have the image here. I really enjoy drawing her.

Son of a gun, this is beautiful, Rabbi. Wonderful job staging the scene. I love how Equina is turned away just a bit, as if she were about to stand up to get something when she realized her guest had fallen asleep. I love the fact she's bigger than the soldier-- fitting since she's a draft, but also a gentle twist on what we'd expect to see. In a way, it says more about their relationship and what it may have looked like before he signed up, making friends with a mare bigger than him. And your choice on the soldier's coloring is outstanding. His messy paint coat is a great contrast to Equina's clean cream color and hints at the turbulence he's seen. Really beautiful job-- I can tell you worked hard on this one. Thank you!
