I was originally doing it by hand, then I experimented with max's old (and I mean REALLY old) fractal textures. Its the cell texture set to a bump map, and because its a fractal, it wraps and joins perfectly. It ended up looking better than the hand drawn bump I'd spent hours doing by hand, which goes to show it always pays to experiment.
