It's been a while since I drew the Exolotl, in that time I left them on the back burner so to speak as I let ideas for what to do with them come to me. I decided they would be a member species of the Ayalatan Alliance, and their homeworld is tidally locked with its sun--the habitable zone of the planet is a tropical rainforest, with perpetual daylight and near-perpetual rain.
The Xolta focus on sustainable ways of living and preserving their little livable section of the planet, making use of solar energy to power their technology (along with having little need for artificial light as the sun is always illuminating the jungle). The fact that their very survival is tied to preserving their environment as well as possible, along with researching methods to make more of their homeworld habitable, has placed a great deal of importance on education, reason, and science, with their expertise in environmental and natural sciences making them of great importance to the Alliance.

As for how they sleep, if they evolved under those conditions, they'd just naturally make it work. Sleep is governed by their bodies, and they can always just close the blinds if they need it to be dark. In fact I imagine their sleeping areas would be windowless or have very small windows fitted with blinds and/or shutters, and possibly be underground to keep them cool.
