Pensive and inquisitive--Kyler Clarke uses his remarkable intelligence and detached approach to conjure solutions firmly out of the box.
Kyler Clarke’s early years were shaped by an atypical degree of intrigue. The bighorn sheep was born in Chinle, Arizona, to Yvonne Cartwright, a young Navajo woman who died soon after giving birth. Kyler’s father, however, remains a mystery and the subject of intense scrutiny. Over time, the young man was able to deduce that, much like his mother, his biological father was likely full Navajo. That’s the extent of what Kyler’s been able to ascertain about him through the years. Consequently, the black ram internalized the notion at an early age that most his family were keeping secrets from him and withholding vital information pertaining to those early years.
Whether done to protect the young man or not, unusual steps were taken shortly after Kyler’s birth to ensure he was subsequently adopted by Yvonne’s partner, Cpt. Sydna Clarke. Cpt. Clarke, a field officer in the U.S. Armed Forces, uprooted her adopted son from Chinle and returned to Dugway Proving Grounds ninety miles north of Salt Lake City. Kyler spent the first eight years of his life in Dugway, Utah, but after his adoptive mother rose up through the ranks, her responsibilities became more esoteric and inscrutable to most of her newfound subordinates. When Kyler turned eight, the black ram and his mana, Carissa Clarke, resettled in a suburb of Salt Lake City, while Col. Clarke commuted on occasion between the proving grounds and the nearby city.
Around this time, Kyler began consistently visiting his extended family down in Navajo Nation every summer. This ritual soon took precedence, and for three months every year, the black ram would spend quality time bonding with his cousin Lucas and Lucas’ father, Thomas “Uncle Tommy” Cartwright. That first summer, Sydna Clarke bestowed upon her adopted son a most special gift. This gift was a keepsake that once belonged to Kyler’s birth mother, Yvonne, and her family: a silver bracelet embedded with small, turquoise stones. While Kyler never knew his mother, he always felt imbued with strength and confidence whenever he wore this precious heirloom.
Even though Kyler didn’t struggle so much in school, the bighorn sheep was always seen by multiple teachers throughout his life as bright but undisciplined. In turn, Kyler resisted entering programs like JROTC at the behest of both his parents, but even with this resistance, he rarely ran afoul with school administrators. The young man continued to visit Lucas and his Uncle Tommy every summer for the next ten years, but now that high school has concluded, that tradition may soon end, as well. Kyler’s soon set to turn the page with this newest chapter in life.
For the next four years, he’ll be studying computer science at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Only time will tell if the secrets surrounding his childhood will ever be revealed.
