That old song's text is supposed to be romantic but it's actually rather creepy when you think about it.

Nope. The writer confirmed it's a song about a stalker.

Here's a link to the interview with Sting that Wikipedia cites:

Also, it was written in 1983, which is before Britain went down the path of massive public surveillance.

Yeah I heard that one for the first time just a couple days ago and it made me uncomfortable.
Looking it up the writer didn't intend it to be anything positive and was a means to work out his demons with an affair he had but for some reason everyone saw it differently.
Strange situation.

I was of the understanding that these things were built with quite snazzy radio receivers on them
I am also under no illusion that a government, especially one as megalithic as that ruling the middle chunk of North America, would pass up the opportunity to do some "passive sensing"
I'm sure they say they don't. I don't believe them.

I was (back in the day) one of “them“ and I can tell you that surveillance of what you listen to who you talk to and who seeks you out, is not the purview of the government it’s big business. The ones you want to fear, but no one does is big business the ones everyone gives all their information to so willingly. It’s ironic and painfully true. You’re just listening to too much Hollywood.
Yep, but I used it as a general symbol of surveillance in this picture. A lot of contemporary concepts like that are hard to represent with simple visual elements so one has to take some artistic license. The AWACS is very well know as a "spy plane" so I thought it conveyed the concept well enough.
Sting even admits the song is about a stalker on some interview somewhere.
Sting later said he was disconcerted by how many people think it is a positive song. He insists it is about the obsession with a lost lover, and the jealousy that follows.

According to Sting he wrote it to be about a creepy stalker, and he finds it really amusing when people play it at their weddings. Unfortunately I have no sources for this beyond some interview I heard on the radio ages ago, so take it for what it's worth. :D
Edit: I see someone posted a link already. I am dumb.

I, for one, find knowing that such a thing is flying over me to be rather reassuring... Sure it would have been best if it was not needed around these parts, but sadly, it is.
About the song, no wonder people find it romantic when the way it is performed is nice, gentle, and feels completely positive, unless you start analysing the lyrics.
Very fine chamois here, they're rare in art and I'm happy every time I see one.
