There was a story that made the rounds a few years ago, about someone who had their laptop decorated - nay, practically covered with black magic marker drawings, and autographs from some big name comic book artists (Jim Lee, Joe Kubert, Stan Lee etc...)
They sent it off to get a minor problem fixed with the screen (backlight had crapepd out if I recall correctly) and when it had come back, all that artwork and all those signatures had been wiped off the outside. There was nothing left but a faint purple residue that showed something had been there once. The company's excuse was that it was company policy to make sure that the case was wiped down with alcohol before the unit was returned, and there was nothing they could or would do about it. My guess is it probably got dipped in a cleaning tank before they opened it.
It could be you ran into a similar ham-handed corporate decision.
