It does the entire time. But the warning message is small and crammed at the top of the viewfinder with other information. If you don't have your eye close to the eyepiece, it is easy to miss (for instance, if you are wearing glasses).
I've never used a Canon DSLR but, I do know on my Canon it shows up on the back screen after the first attempt at a photo. It isn't big but it is the only thing on the screen.
My Canon will let me take a picture but it will give the message on the viewscreen "Cannot Record", but in the mean time, it'll say "No memory card" on the screen.
And, for me, with regularity. I use a digital camera in my job and I have to turn in the card to be downloaded at least once a day. I have three backups and I will sometimes forget to replace the turned-in card. (Usually at least once a week.)
