Soot's played along with your little dare... Will you follow up on your part?
Greeting once again, everyone! I'd like to thank you all once more for all your support. I really didn't expect the warm reception for Soot so it makes me extremely happy!
This time around, Soot is showing off their ability to infect multiple objects at the same time! Each instance of Soot can have its own 'consciousness', but they are still Soot collectively. It's a bit like how the cells in your left and right hands are completely separate but all together make up you! The 'main consciousness' can then either assume direct control of any number of them or even speak through them. Alternatively, they can influence the 'separate' instances to keep their 'autonomy'. A strange and complicated excuse to have a bunch of living suits, really.
Originally, I had a separate pose for the Renamon rather than the current rework of an earlier piece. But, I really wanted the symmetry of masks showing off their insides... Overall, I think that I'm getting the hang of linework and shading again! Someday, I do plan on making a colored version of this. But, since there's a boat load of ideas I want to make, I'll probably stick to grey scale for the time being. That being said, I would love to hear your opinions on it!
Next up's probably gonna be a part two for the Renamon rework to show off more of what happens when you wear a piece of Soot... Catch you all on the flip side!

They're the collective consciousness of a virus! Just as you and me are made of countless cells that, Soot is also made up of the countless Soot viral particles. Unlike us though, they have complete control of every single one of his "cells".
For illustration purposes though, they're a cloud of soot (pun intended)! Originally, I had a brush to make the wisp things but they were really limited in what I could do with them. Thankfully, D682 really helped me out in figuring out how the wisps should actually look so that it's more feasible to draw.

If that being is sentient or animate, then probably not much. They might smell the dust-like particles but not much else.
Other non-suit inanimate objects though are another thing entirely. I think this can be where the concept of the Soot virus really shines. Just imagine anything you own and your very environment being turned 'against' you. Be it plushes or 'toys', they all fall the same and are now working together to help you 'relax'.
Trying to hide against an infected suit that wants to be worn? Not a single corner in your house would be a good hiding place since Soot is your home and where are you gonna hide from your own house? Trying to outrun it instead? How are you gonna flee if the car doesn't want to start?
(For that latter part though, I'll need to improve a hell of a lot more since I can't draw backgrounds to save my life so that'll be something for later down the line... It would probably be easier to show it in written story form so I do plan on posting a short story at some point.)

Yep! Soot has direct control of any 'host' inanimate object they infect, down to the atom. So they can do simple things like change colors or small details on a mask like animate see through eyes to outright transforming it to another thing entirely!
Funnily enough, I do have a small sequence in the works regarding this exact topic so please look forward to it!

Sadly, hiveminds with a central consciousness isn't too common... It's more common to see mindless drones. And inanimate possession might as well be right out the window.
I'll admit, much to my embarrassment, that the lack of either is one of the reasons why I came back to making art...

Mindless drones are fun, but even more fun is knowing and feeling exactly the level of control your possessor holds over you (and not wanting it to stop ;D) So many enticing scenarios one can imagine between two characters being possessed by the same entity interacting with "each other"...
Honestly, making art of stuff you wanna see more of is more than respectable. It's kinda why I started writing haha. It's like getting to commission... yourself. Pretty neat!

Really do love soot as a character...and i have to say seeing a pair of possessed gloves holding open the Lucario mask so you can put it on is really appealing! I like that both of the possessed masks have a pair of eyes to complete the illusion that there's somebody wearing them or to give them a more alive look. So would soot ever possess a full suit and casually walk around in it for fun? Or do they always do it to play around with people and fulfill their needs? What would happen if i slid my hands into his gloves?
Sorry if the questions are a bit much, i just really like them!

I'm not gonna lie. I enjoy seeing floating gloves in art so I'm happy that you enjoyed them too!
No worries about the questions. Soot is a bit of a strange concept. Personally. I'm just ecstatic that someone really enjoys the concept too!
As for the eyes, they're actually those see through eyes on suits, just brought to life too! I mean, might as well go the full way and give that little bit of effort if you're already infecting something to life, right?
For Soot, infecting masks, suits, and even clothes is more for the benefit of their wayward guests that stumble into their dimension. It would be awkward to talk to a cloud of soot or a giant virus core after all. Infecting those things gives their guests a "body" to interact with (and possibly lower their guard with since surely that's all Soot is infecting...)
However, Soot does muck about on their own as a suit from time to time on his own. They can choose to feel what the objects feel too so it wouldn't be surprising if they wanted to have a bit of fun, they would do so. And since Soot isn't bound to any one thing or form, there's definitely a lot of fun to be had!
Finally, what would happen if you slid your hands into gloves? Funnily enough, you managed to guess the main idea of the next sequence! Are you and StrangeUsername somehow peeking at my hard drive? Jokes aside, it would really depend on Soot and what they feel at the moment. They could fully let you have full control and "control them", especially if they've chosen to feel what the gloves feel. Or, they could take full control of you! They may even put up a false struggle and let you "win" just to yoink that victory at the end...

So what's their preference on what they like to possess? Im getting suits but are they ok with vehicles if they need to get from one point to another? And could they make a car walk around in its wheels? I noticed you mentioned soot can change what they're possessing to different forms or shapes
It would be fun to have their gloves on heh, maybe i wouldn't resist too much if they decided to play around a little. I'd probably stick my hands straight in if they asked me to, just depends on what they would use them for
So if the suit they're possessing only has eyeholes do they suddenly gain a pair of eyes like someone is wearing them?
Lastly could they do a little bit of fake aura control while in control of a Lucario suit? May as well get properly into character so i wonder if they could make a little aura sphere or something between their gloves out of their own energy

Preference wise, they adapt to whatever visitor they happen to entertain and aim to use whatever will get the strongest emotional reaction since excess emotional energy is their 'food'.
They don't really need to drive but if they want to bring someone along, they would infect any vehicle that they want. And yes, since they can control all aspects of it, they can also make the car walk around in its wheels if you ask nicely enough.
For the eyeholes in the suit, it's really a communication thing. Soot can leave them as blank eye holes if that's what excites their visitors or to let their wearers see without any kind of obstruction. But it they want to talk, for example, it's much easier and less awkward for a person to look at a suit's "eyes" than gaping holes so they take the effort to create animated see-through "eyes" - like the ones you see on real fursuits.
And as for the fake aura control, they sure can. They'd probably make the Lucario Soot's tassels move like its being blown around by the wind and let out a bit of their Soot cloud in the form of 'aura'. They could even condense a cloud of the Soot virus into an 'aura sphere' that infects things if you throw it at an inanimate object to really help you get in character!

Thanks for answering so many questions! I have to say soots Lucario look is definitely my favourite of theirs so far, the idea of them possessing a car and making it casually walk up to someone they want to play around with is really cool sounding and kinda cute.
Especially love the idea of them using their virus abilities as a sort of fake aura and i guess i personally would prefer the fake eyes they could give themselves rather than the empty eyeholes with their virus form leaking out
Wamted to ask will we ever see soots possess a full Lucario suit?

I really love Soot. It's fun that he can possess multiple things like that and have "separate" consciousnesses. It's a fun excuse for more living suits :P
The inside parts of the masks look amazing btw! You can really see the improvement on renamon compared to the old version. Gray scale is working great, so if it gets more cool ideas out there, I'd say keep it up.

I'm glad that my excuse to have more living suits isn't too terrible!
Thank you as well for the vote of confidence! It really helps me keep going. I suppose I'll stuck for grey scale a fair bit longer then since it roughly takes anywhere from twice as long to even six times as long to do things in color! It's a terrible habit but it's not too strange for me to rework a painting multiple times...
I think I will give colored sequences and comics a shot once I've established a more stable art schedule though!

It's really nice, I promise! And it's always fun to learn more about Soot from your comments and posts, so thanks for going through and responding to us.
Take your time with getting the schedule in order, it's really nice seeing what you're doing already. That habit does sound a bit rough, but I hope you'll find ways to manage it. Even so, looking forward to any art you do, grey scale or in color!
One quick question about Soot btw, can he possess a suit that someone is already wearing, or does it have to be an empty one first?

As long as the suit isn't animate or sentient, then it's fair game for Soot. Hell, it doesn't even have to be a suit either. Clothes, a mask, gloves, and even things like plushes, vehicles, buildings and toys are all potential 'hosts' for Soot to bring to life as a part of them.
So wearing something isn't gonna keep Soot from infecting it. If anything, you've saved them the trouble of getting you in in the first place!
