I drew it,
claire_lamouf colored it. Man, did she color it.
WOW.
Like I told her: Oh my god, that is so phenomenal! Like ... that's the kind of image where you see it and you want to see the movie it's from. The coloring somehow adds this depth to it where like... it has that epic mouse movie appeal, like Bluth's older stuff but not as grim and phantasmal, more down to earth and indie-film-ish, only with adorable mice. I get the same feeling I used to feel when I was watching films like An American Tail or Great Mouse Detective, where sometimes the feelings I'd get from seeing these characters in their world were so palpable that watching the movie was like confronting something real.
Why do I portray myself as a cartoon mouse? Because I am one - WE are the heirs to that world - that world you feel confronting you so emotionally and so powerfully from those movies you treasure (in my case, it was always cartoon mouse movies), that you bring with you into adulthood and into this thing you call "furry". It was always designed for us to do exactly what we yearn even now to do - to jump into it, to make it our own. The story-worlds of movies that touched our hearts and souls were always destined to be a gift to us, the children of their time and of all time.
These drawings I do - every one, from the adult art I don't post to the magical scenes like this - I draw them for one reason: to celebrate my imagination, to put the hidden beauty of it on display for everyone. Art for art's sake, I could care less about. This is all about showing you what's in my mind, and how beautiful your OWN imagination can be. I draw this stuff to bring out the magic in myself and hopefully in you too. Don't miss the forest for the trees - don't set up your own barriers - let it go, let it all go and come jump into this imaginary world with me! I think you'll find it's been waiting for you all along.

I'll say! I liked the original drawing, I thought it had soul, I thought it had heart, but Claire really took it into the 3rd dimension. I was so stricken when I saw it, I was like "oh my gosh, things have come full circle. I really have turned into one of those little epic mice from the movies that shaped my imaginary landscape."
In almost any movie you see, mice are "decent", "well-bred"... you know. "good folks". Tame. Friendly. Harmless. Rats, on the other hand, are shown as being streetwise, clever, and potentially dangerous and threatening. If we're going with cartoon generalizations, I'm far more like a mouse.
Oh don't get me wrong! I love ratties! I don't believe any of the things I just said apply to real animals.
But there's the important part: For me, furry has -nothing- to do with real animals :P I'm the product of a childhood filled to corporate satisfaction with Disney films, not nature documentaries!

Oh... thought you were one of those caught up in the rat-hate-bias.
Well... I'm a "Anthro-Realism" kind of furry where I guess you're more of a "Anthro-Toony" guy, right?

Trust me man, a guy who drove himself to urgent care twice in two days with chewed-up rat-hands, didn't eat food for 3 days, and basically risked his neck in the most stressful week of his adult life all in the interest of saving the lives of two rats he had barely owned for a few days is -not- a rat hater.
Not that I expected you to know that about me, but... now you do :P

aww man I just read through this, and what ...aww.. what a lovely thing to read... I can't say how much those rats mean to me, and I really can't explain how grateful I am for what you did for those two. Those little guys will never know how much they are loved. Ufff. tearing up.
This is a very well drawn piece and Claire did a superb colouring job. Indeed it does look like something out of an animated movie, albeit for adults. :D LOL, it looks like you were telling Dana about when you got yourself into one of those stay fresh food bags from by Cheif Exellence. :D
The piece is nice (I love it even more now it's colored!), but what I *really* liked was your commentary here.
It's fantastic that you can take the images in your head and craft them into something on the page!
And man, you're making me want to go back and watch those old movies again. Rescuers Down Under, The Great Mouse detective.. there *was* as sort of 'mouse theme' running through those movies, wasn't there? That they could tackle somewhat darker encounters (how many disney movies do you see where, in the climactic battle, the villain beats the bejesus out of the good guy for most of the fight?) because they were using mice..
Also, I would totally watch a cartoon mouse movie about/surrounding philosophy. That would totally be awesome.

There totally was a mouse thing going on! As a child, I was utterly inundated with cartoon mice. They were always played off as the everyday, you-and-me type folks of the animal kingdom. Small, inconsequential, largely harmless, but meaningful to one another. We were -supposed- to be relating to them - they stood for us. It worked a little too well, though :P now I relate to them so much I see myself as one.
Heh. I am not sure where I stand. All I know is, I love watching furry toons. I commission probably mainly because I want to see more of the characters I love so much in movies and cartoons. The movie is over, the series ended, and you are left wanting more.
And yes, this is a beautiful image.

To borrow a phrase from kingcheetah - that drawing is made of pure WIN-TONIUM!
Nice work from both artists. Clare's background, especially, is superb.

Regarding the comments accompanying this picture: You have uncovered a Profound Truth, young mouse-wan. A Truth that nearly all of us sense on a some level, but one that few fully grasp in their lifetime.
And as profound as it is, it is just one of many you will discover. Congratulations! Your journey has begun...
...Just beware of mousetraps, and cats bearing anvils with ill intent.

I'm especially touched by the "I want to see the movie this scene is from" sentiment. Most of my favorite art in this fandom has inspired feelings like that in me, and I have seen precious little art in recent years that has had that effect on me anymore. So, yeah, REALLY well done, man. :D
It's exactly that magic feeling I'm trying to give rise to. It lives in anyone who's experienced it, and even though movies and furry fanart alike have both been lacking in delivering us that feeling in recent years, I'm not one to watch it die - the truth is, it's one of the few things that ever makes me -truly- happy in life, to experience that feeling. It's why when I roleplay, I put myself in the situation rather than playing a character, and why when I draw, I draw from the heart and I put myself right in there too. I want to feel that imaginary world pressing up against the skin of my eyeballs, so to speak. I want to experience it. And I've learned that if you want something... it's best to share it with others. If I put out enough of that vibe, I will attract others who want to feel that magic too, and we can share it amongst ourselves. Let the imagination revolution continue!
