The Old Man to His Child
A Thursday Prompt poem

Prompt: an old man talking to a child about writing
You wish to be a writer? Come to me, my child!
It’s a wonderful thing to let your fancy run wild!
To take pen and ink, and be by words beguil’d!
But there are steps you must take, to be a writer;
A long road it may be, but no burden is lighter;
So now cheer up, and let your smile be brighter.
The first lesson is this: That you must learn to Read;
The Old and New Masters, I would urge you to feed
Upon their words and ideas, giving your garden seed.
The second lesson, please heed me, is very much like the first
And that’s upon Ideas, sense and nonsense, to slake your thirst
Manuring the mind’s field, to let your own thoughts burst.
To acquire and use Words is the third lesson
But keep a wary eye, your verbiage to lessen
But not too far; keep your readers guessin.’
My fourth lesson to you my child is Composition;
And I’m certain you’ll forgive me my imposition
That Words and Ideas must take their position.
My fifth lesson, please heed me, is to Feel;
The world’s joys and sorrows must appeal
To your heart, to make what you write real.
A sixth and final lesson I shall impart,
And that’s to write what is in your heart;
Write every day, in whole or in part,
And like a knife, keenly whet your Art.

To be even more honest, this was also competing for space. I posted it this morning (Adult-rated; NSFW, possible trigger warning): https://www.furaffinity.net/view/52710196/
From the first to this one... I feel like I've gone from Hell to... somewhere that they talk in rhyme... LOL
Excellent work, on rhyme and meter both! I don't have the patience for such things, but this certainly makes it compelling to at least try every now and then.
