There was a rumor going around that I croaked. So I thought I would post this photo of me posing with Kono Kalakaua, or just Kono. I was a big fan of both the old and new Hawaii 5-0. He was also named after his uncle who accidentally got in the way of one of Zeus’s lightning bolts. Kono is three as of June 2023 and for that age he is growing one hell of a second rack, then again his father is Brick who also grows one heck of a rack. Not sure what side of Brick’s parents that had the genetics of huge racks and short faces.
I don’t know if any of you remember Elliott, but he was our first successful rescued Fallow Buck. He passed away last fall at the age of seven from pneumonia along with a battle injury. Brick and Kono are great but they aren’t like Elliott. He’s missed.
So far we have five fallow fawns running around that we know of. Like every year we always lose a few. Preemies are always very hard to keep alive, of which we had one so far this year. We also lost one due to being bit from a young rattlesnake which is a first. Then Storm’s from a milk deficiency. Something we need to be better on the ball with next year. We lost four of Stormy’s fawns that way, but two did survive, Star, and River but it was a battle to keep them alive.
The two foster Whitetails that decided to me my place their residence are doing fine. Willow the older doe is aways hopping the fence to go visit the neighbors, then hops back in after she gets bored of exploring. She has been having her fawns on the property. Maple is more like a back porch dog. She has chosen laying on the deck as her safe zone.
The rest of the herd are doing real well. Including a goat named Calico got dumped on us when whe was just a couple of weeks ago. She helped keep Maple active when she sprained her front leg. Now the two are best friends. As much as she can be annoying, if I were to get rid of her, Maple would be heartbroken.
