The Great Blue Ape is a species of jungle-dwelling primates related to the Golden Apes that live in the open grasslands of Elysium. The name of this creature comes from the greyish-blue coloration of its fur, which helps it blend in with the murky surroundings of the dense forest.

Great Blue Apes inhabit a rather limited area in the southeast part of the Elysium continent, where tall mountains create a massive rain shadow, leading to the creation of the eastern desert further inland. This lush, green, coastal forest provides the apes with a large variety of food, both in the form of plants, as well as sea life that inhabits the coasts. While they are rather reclusive, these apes have regularly been seen exiting forested areas and foraging on rocky beaches in search of oysters, crabs, and other small sea creatures (which seem to be more than just a supplement to their plant-based diet).

Great Blue Apes display clear sexual dimorphism, with the males having bright-red eyebrows and light-blue fur on top of their heads. They are also slightly larger than the females, which, aside from the pink patches under their eyes, are far less flashy.

These massive primates live in small family groups which usually consist of a mature male, one to three females, and their offspring. The younger apes leave the family group upon reaching maturity (at around 15 years of age) in order to start their own families. Until then, the older children spend their time helping their parents in taking care of their younger siblings and learning about their environment. Young males may be chased out earlier if they decide to challenge their father for dominance, in which case they are very unceremoniously kicked out of the group.
