“Few things are as calming to me as surfing, even just sitting on my surfboard among the waves can really put me at peace, and let all the troubles of the day fade away,… but a lot of people wonder how a leaf-wearing jungle girl ended up as a surfer, well, I guess now is as good a time as any to tell you.
It happened not long after I was brought to the island, I was having a bad day, I mean a really bad day,… I emerged from the jungle onto the eastern shore, my leaves tattered around the edges, sand dripping from my hair, and with more than my fair share of bruises, to spot a tourist on the beach and his small boat nearby. Well, the last thing I needed was to have to deal with some tourist wandering into the jungle, so I headed towards him to tell him to go away.
As I got closer, I saw that he seemed to be interested in the water and the waves, not the jungle. He was an older man, tall and skinny, with short dark hair, a red shirt, and a floppy-edged hat, and he was holding a strange object, long, wide and flat. He smiled as he saw me, and didn’t seem to think much of my clothes, but obviously noticed I was rather frustrated, and not having a great day. He told me he was just here to ‘catch some waves’, and asked if I wanted to join him, gesturing to a second object, nearby, like the one he was holding.
This caught me off-guard, and piqued my curiosity, so I accepted his offer and listened as he told me all about Surfing, and showed off the objects, surfboards, to me. Before long we were in the water and he was teaching me the basics of it, and letting me try it. I fell off the board quite a few times, but somehow it didn’t bother me, and with his encouragement I kept trying. Before long I had gotten the hang of it and the two of us were surfing along, riding some really nice waves, he even commented how quick a learner I was. It came pretty easily for me, and it was just fun,… speeding across the waves, water spraying around me, sun shining,… before long all the troubles I had gone through that day seemed so distant, and for the first time since coming to the island I really felt at peace.
We must have surfed for hours before we finally headed ashore, and he seemed really happy that I had enjoyed surfing, and was feeling better. He smiled and offered me his extra surfboard, he said I was ‘meant for it’. I tried to decline, and offer him something in return, but he insisted, and I graciously accepted, giving him a grateful hug in return.
At this point a voice from his boat called out to him,… ‘Little Buddy?’ … and he said it was time for him to go. We said our goodbyes, and as I headed down the beach I looked back to watch the little boat sailing away into the horizon.
Since then, surfing has become a part of who I am, it is something that I really enjoy, and that brings me peace amidst all the troubles the island can bring. I think I’ve gotten pretty good at it, and I still have the board he gave me, though I’ve also gotten others and crafted a few of my own, but that is a story for another time,…”
This moment of peace and tranquility comes from
usagiforehead and certainly can be a rare thing for Ember.
It might seem odd that such a simple picture has such a complex story added onto it, but this is a story I’ve had in mind for a long time, and this moment of quiet reflection seemed the perfect chance to tell it. As for the picture itself, I really do love how relaxed and at peace Ember looks, she is just plain happy to have a moment like this. You can practically feel the breeze, from the way her hair is swaying and the crest on the wave behind her, which really adds to the feel of the piece. And the sun shining from above, to shimmer off her surfboard and hair, is a really nice touch. Overall, you just get a great feeling of calm and tranquility from this piece, so, enjoy it, and the story that made it possible. :).

Yeah, that seems about right, when everything was just being troublesome for Ember, a surfer dude comes out of nowhere and presents her with a hobby she otherwise never could have discovered, and look at her now, riding waves from water to lava, dude knew what he was talking about when he saw her surf :). Not to mention the surf board just fitting her really well. ;)
Great pic though, love how she looks just enjoying the peaceful breeze of the sea as she reminisces. :)

Heh, yeah, that does seem about how things tend to go for Ember, when things are looking really bad, something turns up to make things better. But yeah, no doubt she might see surfers on Coconut Island, but had this random guy not turned up she likely never might have tried it, and yeah, now she is surfing like a pro wherever she can, so he definitely knew what he was talking about, and about the board being meant for her. ;)
Indeed, she really looks great, so peaceful and happy, enjoying the breeze and remembering how it all started. :)

Indeed it does, good and bad things tend to show up and balance each other out. Though yeah, she might have seen them there, but most likely wouldn't have cared for it too much without that guy giving her a push, and yeah, with all the stuff she's done, clearly he knew how good she was and how good the board matches her. ;)
Oh indeed, it's such a nice pic of her remembering where she started surfing. :)
Of course man! :)

Oh, indeed it is, I'm glad you liked it. :)

It was really cool and really nice for that guy to teach Ember how to surf :). And to see that she has made it a way to find some calm and peace for herself out of the hectic situations she finds herself in, or any of her foes are trying to cause and stir some trouble for her or the Islanders she protects, really is great to see :D. We all have to relax at one point or another ;).
Still a really nice pic in the end :)

Indeed, it was great of him to teach her how to surf, and it is very nice to see how it has become a way for her to find peace and calm amidst all she goes through on her island. :D. Indeed we do, even Island Guardians. ;).
