Family
An orphan's wish to get a family gets fulfilled in the least expected of ways, but desirable at the very least.
1- Claire was thrown to a world of suffering even before she was born, she had nightmares that an unborn should not have, and she was sick even as a fetus. She suffered so much that her life was threatened to end before it began.
She grew up in an orphanage with no true memory of who their biological parents were, outside of a story that her parents were mean and abusive and she was rescued, but rescued from what?
2- Her life and times at the orphanage were long, boring, and sorrowful. She was an ugly kid, with birthmarks all over her body and a frail health. She was poor, and she suspected money was important to be happy. And she also had no family to call her own and that made her miserable.
No friends and no family, she attracted misfortune and even those few people she cared for left her for good, like a few fast friends her age that were charismatic and were adopted quickly or a few caretakers that cared for her, but only for a short while since they too moved away when they got better jobs.
3- The only thing that didn’t abandon her and was sort of good was her books. She learned to read when she was very little and loved fantasy stories.
She loved those ones where the protagonist was a girl who suffered very much and was virtuous and misunderstood, those heroines were herself in a million books, but it all ends well in the end for her.
In the end…
4- Sometimes she would cry when she read about happy families that cared for each other, of how the poor found well deserved wealth, of how the miserable overcame their sorrows. Would it be too much to ask if she had a bit of that too?
When she fantasized of being beautiful and closed a book and saw her birthmarks, she reminded herself it was all a lie. When she remembered she was all alone in the core, with no good or bad family or friends, she cried in angst and confusion. She didn’t deserve to be born, not like this.
Not like this
5- It was Christmas eve, she kneeled and made a wish knowing that a pure hearted person might be heard by God in this time of year, as she has heard he helps those who suffer.
She prayed, she had dinner, and she went to bed in long, simple pajamas.
The orphanage she lived in was by the ocean and she dreamt, and she was listened from far away, perhaps not by the God she prayed to, but by someone quite different and quite eager to meet her.
6- In her dreams there was a song that was repetitive in a good way, a soundtrack that repeated itself and it was as long as life itself, a sound that came from the sea, a sound that surrounded her and was quite soothing and filled her with calm.
Sometimes the song was just sound, sometimes it conveyed a voice of pure joy to her heart.
“Soon my little love you will be born, I can feel you moving inside of me.”
Unlike most nightmares Claire had this was a good dream, but as all good things, it had to end very soon.
7- Claire opened her eyes; she was dressed up in her long simple pajamas and surrounded by a yellowish, gooey substance. She didn’t feel tired anymore and even as this has the logic of a dream, it didn’t feel like one, she felt quite awake.
This can’t be happening; this can’t be real.
She can’t see nothing outside of yellow and she was desperate to come out, so she would not drown in this… thing.
8- She used her hands and legs to try to feel where she was standing or sleeping but she realized she was rather floating inside of something. She touched the walls of this thing, smooth, round, and fragile. She punched the walls and they cracked, so she continued punching.
She kicked and her legs came out of this shell. So did her arms. So did her head.
She was inside an enormous egg, and she kept on breaking it until she was finally free and if you think that’s strange wait to learn what happened next.
9- She was inside of something quite large, as she could feel the walls ceiling and floor were made of flesh pressing her and while it was nice to touch, the space inside of here was so tight she could not even stand, only crawl.
She was in complete darkness so she relied on touch to guide herself to freedom.
She stopped, she felt something round and about her size, a bit bigger.
Another egg.
10- Claire opened the egg and inside there was a girl about her age, on pajamas, who left the fetal position and was completely covered in the yellowish substance. It smelled good so Claire tried it.
Yolk, she was eating yolk and it was tasty.
The two girls were eating and getting to know each other, so far, their reality was that they were ordinary orphan girls who didn’t knew each other who just came out of eggs, nothing unusual here. But they remembered having a former life, a real life.
11- Eloise, the other girl, was telling her story when the ground began to move and the fleshy trap, they were in became too constrictive, too tight.
They ducked or they would get killed.
They got crushed but they didn’t die, they passed out while the body of the giant expelled them, she was giving birth to twins.
12- When they woke up, they were still alive and floating in water, the water was much too cold for them and they felt pain all over their bodies from the crushing experience.
Eloise noted her hands and legs were much flatter, Claire was laughing at her but not for long, she noticed the same changes happening to her.
Then something abnormal happened, to break with the normality mentioned above. They heard a song with words of pure joy
13- “My daughter’s, my angels, do not be frightened. I am your mother and, like all newborns, you are born weird and your heads are full of weird ideas and dreams. You were having a long, bad dream, but I am here now, your hearts will be full of joy soon”
The girls heard the voice but did not saw anything as darkness was covering the sun. Then they realized when they looked up that there was something so large that it clouded the sun, it looked like a humongous manta ray with quite a large stinger, a pearl white body that shone like the sun or could be as black as the night and some features that resembled a human woman or kind of, like her head who had yellowish hair and deep blue eyes. She had arms and hands even underneath her larger than life wingspan and tiny legs compared to the huge proportions of her body, resembling a manta ray.
She was the angel
And they would call her mother soon but right now she was scary and they were afraid of her.
14- They were at the ocean, no doubt, and both girls, sisters at birth and orphans in memory, felt the need to breathe. They were not breathing underwater in order not to drown.
They swam upwards away from the manta lady and to freedom and air, only to find that the air at night was chillier than the ocean and they were choking. They gasped for air in vain.
With her tail the manta lady wrapped the two girls and pulled them down.
15-“Breathe”
they heard from a distance
And their necks opened and they grew gills and they could breathe underwater.
The manta ray angel was singing for them again, she was not angry that they ran away, only sad they did not trust her.
“I am your mother, your true mother, after being born all mermaidens have disorienting dreams and a hideous appearance but I love you regardless, and learn this, your bodies will change to resemble mine, this happens after you leave your eggs and touch the ocean’s embrace.”
16-Eloise tried to speak, but rather she made a song that was quite melodic to explain to their mother this was all so confusing, that she wanted to go home.
“You were just born and this is your home, with me, but go ahead and explore home and take your sister with you.”
She also told them to not feel embarrassed of the change, it is natural for all hatchlings to endure it.
And Eloise was given a more fitting name, Melody.
17-Melody did not like her new name though, she wanted to return to her former life.
“Was it beautiful?” Claire asked
“What?”
“Your life”
“It had many times of happiness but it was real.” She wouldn’t cave in to the happiness of having a mother and a”
“Sister” Claire sang too, she found
herself being happy just being near Melody, she loved having a sister, and if this was real, she wouldn’t mind at all.
Visuals: As they swim their clothing is getting dissolved into the water, leaving them tastefully naked.
18-As they swam farther and farther away Melody felt discomfort and embarrassment as she saw and felt a long tail being born from her
“I am not a fish” “I am not a fish” Melody kept on repeating
“Then explain this” said Claire, as she saw her own tail developing. Claire was visibly happy about this
19- Instead of ugly birthmarks Claires skin was turning as blue as the sky at night and the birthmarks became luminescent spots. Quite shiny and beautiful, her hands also became webbed and her teeth shark like.
20- Soon both girls bodies were changing faster and faster now to resemble newborn manta rays
Visuals: Both girls get the wingspan of manta rays
21- The water didn’t feel as cold now and their bodies were resembling those of their mother.
Mother
She must feel so proud.
Visuals: They get the final touches, and now look like mermaid mantas.
22- Claire sang out loud in hopes to find their mother, who soon appeared.
Claire stayed but Melody hid, still not recognizing their mom as their mom, or Claire as her sister
Claire looked like their mother now but was still more shiny when she grew close to light sources or was happy, so instead of Claire their mother gave her a new name, Shiny.
23- “Why is Melody hiding from me?”
“Melody come please”
Melody showed herself to mother, Melody was a sand-colored manta ray mermaiden now, her sandy hair was beautiful, although only as beautiful as Shiny s own jet-black hair.
“Shiny woke up from a bad dream, I woke up too but was in denial, I feared abandonment, I feared this would all end.”
“It is your first day and there is so much to live, so much to experience and love. Let go of your lost form and all those weeks of dreaming inside of me, it was a bad dream, that’s all.”
24- And soon Melody’s heart opened to the idea of having a family, and Shiny also loved this new experience.
Their former past as orphans soon became a distant memory, a tale, and then a hard to believe tale, as they knew they were born for happiness.
The end.
