If the weapon's based off of a quandao or nine-ring broadsword, the rings should be on the other side of the blade, the blunt part. It's used for catching and disarming with twisting and jerking of the weapon, and gives the blunt side a little more purpose in the process, as well as not hindering the blade itself.
