Hero-Knight of Avalon: Human Form
"This is the outfit, gear, and title Etrian wore during a particularly interesting segment of his life where he fought alongside a young Merlin and later a great and gigantic heroic dragon in defense of magical worlds, one of which is a grand Yggdrasil-like tree world named Avalon composed of different realms that make up the roots, trunk, and branches. Though the outfit was only used in the adventures of this Avalon."
This is a part of Etrian's whole story that is key since his inception many years ago as a character, and it's stayed that way ever since. The sword is the Fang of Valdearg, created from the literal tooth of the namesake dragon who posed a huge obstacle to Etrian and the young Merlin.
Then, much later, the shield was made from the scale of a mighty and enormous green dragon who becomes a great friend of Etrian and later Merlin, combined with hardy wood derived from the roots of Avalon itself powered by Merlin's magic through the enchanted green gemstone.
And finally, the armor itself is a gift to Etrian from the denizens of the Root Realms as thanks for his part as their champion on multiple occasions.
