Ruby Weaver has had the worst week of her life. Fortunately, its over. Unfortunately, that means both her life and her week.
This Rapture fungus doesn't normally infect Ruby's species, having developed over millenia to take on grasshoppers, but, well, mutations happen, and the infection is self sustaining, in effect 'animating' what's left of Ruby's body and keeping it in a suspended state of decay. Furthermore, its managed to copy all of Ruby's neural pathways into its own latticework, in effect giving it her memories and intelligence ... well, pale facsimiles that will end making her something else, a bit quirkier than either parent species.
Identity crisis, crisis of 'ant'ity are major themes of Ruby Rapture's tale as she brings the spores of an entirely different scourge back to her parent colony.

Sometimes I wonder where my mind goes when it dreams. Obviously Planet Earth's (excellent HD series, btw) fungally-infected insect sequence got to me, though its been a couple of nights since I watched it.
Ruby Rapture, the carpenter ant fungal pseudo-zombie, is copyright me.

Yes, I know, her old name was Weaver. She had a great great grand-drone that was a weaver and roughly one percent of her colony goes by the Weaver last name, and are known for practicing oddball 'duties' throughout Patagonia 16.
Ruby Weaver had studied as a Xeno-Species Behavioralist, specializing in the barbaric grasshopper peoples before her misfortunate accident.

Don't nematodes do the same thing to ants? They control the ants and make them bite down on a blade of grass, and then a bird eats them and the same thing happens to the bird. I think the basis of nematodes are they want the host to commit suicide so they have something to breed in and be ingested by another creature...but yea, I feel bad for your ant.
