In some cases, or if you try to request a refund before the final permitted date, your registration fee will get transferred to next year's convention, or something along those lines. Best to read the fine print, but, yeah, having to cancel really sucks. :(
I had to cancel multiple times and I was just blown off. The latest time I challenged the charge before the convention started with the credit card company and I think they will give me my money back as I could prove that they where blowing me off. I am lust waiting for the rad tape to be used up.
