Autumn, Fourteenth year of the Tianzhong Emperor First year of the Jingyu Emperor
Qing watched quietly as Baiji put on his helm. The two of them were in their quarters, a cave-like dormitory underground filled with heated kang stones and flowing water, a comfortable if spartan existence.
The male dragon finished putting on his armor, grabbed his guandao, a massive 120 jin weapon ten feet in length, and hefted it into the air.
*You are staying then, my love.* Qing stated as she half got up from her reclined position atop the kang.
The white dragon nodded. *I am. And I must. The elders are evacuating the hatchlings and the sick and injured, but the eggs will take time.*
*How many of us are there to defend the capital?*
*All of the longs in Anping number 150, including the young and the sick. We can assemble perhaps a hundred warriors.*
*How many of our people were with Guardian Mulu when he went North with the Emperor?*
*300.*
Qing was silent.
*Do you think they will come after our people if Anping falls?* She finally asked after a long pause.
Baiji’s polearm twirled in the air as he practiced thrusts and blocks.
*Yes. We are too closely tied with the Empire. If the Death Worms and Bankhar don’t come after us then the Eluts will surely take our offspring for their own and destroy the rest to deprive the Empire of new servants.*
Qing sighed and nodded as she got to her feet. *You are right. We will defend the defenseless. We should protect those of us who need help.*
*We should also defend the humans here. After all, we longs are guardians of this land, and should protect all of its inhabitants, including humanity. It is our duty.*
Qing went over to her scale armor hanging by the waters. *Yes, yes. I have decided- I will stay as well.*
Baiji stopped his practice and throwing his polearm over his shoulder, went over to his mate, gently nuzzling her on the cheek.
*Don’t do this for me. Our chances of survival are low. Our chances of victory are even lower. We are simply to hold out as long as we can. When the real crisis hits, before our last escape lines are cut, I want you to leave.*
Qing was already strapping her armor on her chest. She snorted.
*Enough with your self sacrificial heroics. I agree with your position. We are guardians. We are the protectors. So I will do my duty to protect those that helped hatch us and raise us in this world. I am not afraid of death. But I am afraid of losing you and of losing my morals.*
Baiji smiled, twirling his neck around Qing’s and gave her snout a gentle lick.
*You are a brave and loyal warrior, and I am glad that you chose to be my mate. If we die, then so be it. We will die together, defending our homes, and protecting our lands and peoples.*
Qing smiled and returned the lick. *We will do our duty-together. Let the will of Heaven decide. Whatever the outcome, hopefully it is enough for me to be by your side, forever, doing what is right in this world.*
