Due to my history obsession with swordsmen and special forces, but my own limited access to more sources and proper pictures, I first thought he was a member of the Arditi - Italian shock troops who entered trenches with knives called pugnales, and who were basically Marine Spec Ops before they were invented - until I double-checked the uniform.
On my defense, I thought the picture was in black and white and I hadn't had a coffee.
