Dont get me wrong, it wasnt a matter of respect. I always felt the shows were a bit odd.
As for the incidents, I remember the first one being sus on the enforcement part cause as you said it was a adult theatre, but the second incident with the potential child porn that made me rethink why the shows felt so weird for me.

it wasn't even cp - it was a prosecutor that wanted to make a name for himself by finding one or two 'arguable' pics in a huge archive of material that reubens had bought in its entirety. if it had been a jeffrey jones type situation where he was actually doing something bad then sure, fuck him. but it wasn't that. it was a railroading.
Definitely a part of my childhood was watching Pee-Wee's Playhouse, watching Pee-wee's antics and screaming whenever the secret wo-- Well, you know.
I knew he was getting up there in age, but he certainly never looked it. It was as if he had whatever it was that kept Dick Clark looking young most his life, Paul barely aged either! Though it wasn't old age, but rather cancer that took him from this world. I understand why he chose to keep it a secret.
Pee-Wee may be gone, but let's not forget what his last line in the series was: "The playhouse will always be here for everyone to play in, forever and ever and ever. On that, you have my word!"
