Had the first real good storm of the year come through a couple of weeks ago, which afforded me the opportunity to try out some plans for lightning photography I had been thinking about.
I think it came out pretty ok for a first try at capturing lightning.

Thanks :)
Unfortunately I haven't had any more good opportunities to try it since this shot.
There IS a trick to it.
Set yourself up on a tripod. Then, set your shutter speed to Bulb (allowing you to hold the shutter open until you choose to close it) if you have that option. Otherwise, you'll need to use the longest exposure time you have.
Focus to infinity.
Open the shutter and wait for the lightning. After the strike, close the shutter.
This only works at night. The shot above was taken with my old camera which did not have a Bulb setting for shutter speed. I took it with a 15 second exposures. I would take a 15 second exposure and hope lightning occurred in that time. I got lucky. :)
