i use the built-ins to create my own presets.
ex:
Simpler (for raw sin, square, and saw waves)
Analog (overall fav VST)
Impulse (built in drums, filter them heavily)
Sampler (take samples of random noises and make them into drums or synths)

hoping to develop external midi controlled synths but i rarely work on music as it is so project has yet to get off the ground.

how about you, you into music creation at all?

I'm VERY into music creation. I love using Massive and Albino3, sampler is good, but Operator is by far the most powerful tool (IMO) on Ableton. I use a fuckload of launchpads and APC20/40's for launching multiple sets.

I'm a sound geek.
