well, first you get to the boozing, then you get to the drinking, then you go pub-crawling, then at some point to get convinced you're surrounded by vampire dopplegangers after your blood and things all go downhill from there to the point you wake up naked amidst the corpses and there's a sheep you apparently declared the new mayor.
i guess. it's not, y'know, like i have experience with that kinda thing, i'd never be the type to kill all those people.....

~Didn't mean to!
"But you took every last roupie out of them!"
~A hero needs funds!
"... and you bought that smooth, self-polishing, vibrating sword sheath."
~Gotta get the demon blood off somehow!
"... you fight with an ax."

In reading this, it occurs to me just how hard it would be for a professional hero to give references.
A true hero of course, works alone, else the entire band would be auditioning. That means that all of the people who have seen the heroes best work (totally getting that crit that one time) are by necessity dead. It's not like you could really present a mostly dead villain as signs that you did good work. I suppose imprisoned is a special case, but being villains they're not likely to put in a good word.
In short, the solo hero hiring process has to be done entirely on faith.
Thinking about it, I guess it makes sense why so much herowork is pay on completion. You make an offer any number of heroes whose abilities you have no way of confirming can pursue, and then just pay the one who lived. Their skills having now become self evident.
