Something I hope to work with in the future, but I can't say when. We have:
* The uptight first officer a little too focused on rules & regulations.
* The empathic captain, who dislikes excessive protocol & formality, and prefers the casual, friendly atmosphere of a small ship & crew.
* The reptilian engineer, who loves to nerd out over technology, and is weirded out that no one else eats live food.
* The shapeshifting doctor, fascinated by the various anatomy of other species, because his own is barely more complex than a single-celled organism.

Maybe the captain is a Caitian? If M'Ress is any indication, they don't like footwear. I'm just glad that both she and the engineer are barefooters for whatever reason.
Anyway, all these characters have potential, and I look forward to seeing their adventures someday. BTW, do they have names yet?

Caitian's kinda of evolved/changed like Klingons between TOS and TNG, not sure If they also don't want to talk about It. ( https://youtu.be/rA210N8Y1iM?t=212 )
I’d say the personalities are eerily similar to Lower Decks… But let’s be honest, this is pretty standard in a 4 person band. Lower decks aren’t the first to use those personalities.
Those personalities have been done a dozen times because they WORK.
They create a perfect base to build more character details onto. And it sounds like you already have some good ideas and quirks to go with.
What I’m saying is, a good take on the 4 man band and I look forward to see where this goes.
And they’re probably all going to end up fucking at some point.

Why wait?
Maybe Starfleet needs an in-person presence when a viewscreen won't do, and this is the fastest way to deliver A Guy to Flarbulax VII without diverting a gigantic flagship.
Maybe these tiny ships have ridiculous power-to-weight ratios and act as space tugboats. Needing a tug implies someone screwed up, the ship is broken, and some redshirts caught fire - hence commander, engineer, doctor.
Maybe it's a generic science vessel, and this is the bare minimum to keep that running smoothly, so more of them can freely zip around the galaxy. The doctor could be optional except holodecks take up space.
Maybe this is the fixer crew for other Starfleet vessels. Is your plot-of-the-week engineer facing thematically resonant technical hurdles? Here's a handful of characters who'd be memorable one-offs if your gigantic flagship was the one with a show.

Those are all interesting possibilities, although my favorite among them is "delivering people to Flarburlax VII". (Cool planet name, BTW. I just might use it!) If the Sprite is basically Starfleet's answer to Uber, then the regulars could deal with interesting/quirky guest stars on a regular basis. Thanks!
