Xiulang was Lian's favorite slave whom she doted on and was bred to be intelligent but was given a neural inplant to suppress her intelligence as she turned out to be too smart for her initial owner so Lian took her under her care instead and secretly removed the inhibitor. So Xiulang has been fiercely loyal since that day and completely devoted to Lian, perhaps a case of hero worship initially but she was always treated respectfully by her mistress.

Now that Lian is working for Star Fleet she has taken up the role as her personal assitant, and occasionally act in a diplomatic role as she is quite the shrewd negotiator. She also comes along sometimes on Lian's lectures to offer a perspective from a slave in the NAW society. Since obtaining freedom her devotion to Lian ahs only become stronger and she eventually used that freedom to ask Lian to marry her, making it clear that these were her own feelings and not Lian forcing her into a marriage just to get to keep her around as a former slave.
