Kregn gave me a bunch of information of the Cerulean Elaks that we needed to keep good care of them
Cerulean Elaks are large, flightless beetles that weigh around 500kgs and 1.6 meters tall and 2 meters long, most of which is muscle and gut, their wild counterparts live in the mountain and are significantly smaller and are native to the parts of the Cerulean Roof just north east of the Hills Province.
They have four life stages. The egg, the grub, the pupa, and the adult; All of which have their own uses in Fennec Society
The female will lay around 35 eggs in a clutch. Only 20 of them will be fertile and the other 15 is a distraction tactic that has been kept over from the wild cousins. The female will carry the eggs on her back as she forages for grass. The infertile eggs will often be harvested to be roasted or smoked and eaten
When the eggs hatch the grubs will be roughly 40cm long and weigh 128kg, needless to say this information shocked me when I heard it, they undergo 2 to 3 moults. This phase can last years. These grubs are herded by the Fennecs, riding on adult beetles and using slings to fend off and sometimes kill predators. Messenger crows are often used as an early warning system and will harass potential threats. Very few grubs will make it to adult hood as the Fennecs will eat them or they will be attacked and mauled by predators. The grubs will eat any and all plant and fungal matter. Often times the Fennecs will feed them toxic mushrooms and inedible parts of crops because they can break down the toxins. These specific grubs are a delicacy because the compounds that came from the neutralized and broken toxins are aromatic and infused delicious flavours into the meat.
When the grub finishes their last moult they will harden their skin and become a pupa, times attaching themselves to the largest available adult of the same herd and pupate, this will take about 1-3 months. This phase is inedible and is often worshipped and prayed to for a successful pupation. Fennecs will gather flowers and branches of medicinal anti-parasite plants to weave wreaths to place around the pupae as offerings.
When the pupa hatches, the adult beetle will emerge and eat its own pupa shell as it spreads its elytra and wings to dry them out. This stage will live for a around 5 more years and eat mostly grass and hay with a fermenting gut. This stage is incredibly strong and can carry up to 50% of their body weight. They will usually die of natural causes as their shells, especially elytra are thick and durable. When they do die the meat is either eaten or sacrificed to the Fennec gods, while the carapace is fashioned into various useful things, knives, cups, shields, armour, bowls, jewellery, etc. The crafting and carving of which is a closely guarded Fennec secret, as the art is considered sacred,
