I don't remember what British game show I was watching, but it mentioned that because Ariel was willing to give up her voice like that, it makes her the worst Disney princess as far as role models are concerned. (It didn't mention which one was the best one; I guess you can be the judge of that.)
To be fair in "The Little Mermaid," Ariel didn't trade her voice to legs to impress a guy. She did it because she wanted to spend time with him on land and she was taken advantage of by Ursula after being put in a vulnerable position by King Trigon.
