The Empress is traditionally a figure of motherhood and abundance; this mother is surrounded by her adopted children, her family of choice. Each was outcast from their own family for one reason or another, and she accepts all--and protects with the steel-belted ferocity of Erzulie Dantor, whose vèvè she wears to show her dedication to the young and those marginalized by conventional society. Her message is clear: the immortality of having children is only for those who have worked for it and deserve it. If you are going to parent, parent WELL.
