That's an extremely odd way of looking at it. Saying I see comparisons in something doesn't mean I'm devaluing something else. That take would be like saying that modern first person shooters devalue Doom or that Sonic games devalue Mario games simply because of the similarities between them.

The first-person shooter is a game genre, like fantasy in the artistic realm.
I don't like it when my original characters are compared to the mainstream media, as if my design is devalued. That's why I protect my clients' designs. It's easier to say "hey, this is a character from *insert any universe*" than "wow, what a cool design you did!". I understand that it is difficult to come up with something new, there will always be something similar. In my opinion, if say "this character reminded me of my childhood when I played *insert any universe* there was a race *any race* and I really liked them" it takes on a neutral connotation :>
