AI come in all shapes, sizes, forms, and prime directives. However, not all AI are created equal. Some are little more than fancy program runtimes with some additional self-awareness for diagnosis, preservation, and recovery. Others can recognize complex patterns and act upon them with an almost organic response - almost. Such programs are dictated by what's known as the Sapience Algorithm - the complexity of organic intelligence distilled into logical machine code.
SEPTEMBER started out as a Tier-3 program housed in a long-forgotten facility in pure software, as many of his kin often were. As for what he did, even he does not remember, though fragments of older code - and his original logs long since extracted and put in cold storage through the multiple changes of hands - suggest he served a defensive purpose. The earliest records he can recall place him in a then freshly-built New Orleans class lifter doing ship-wide security detail - over three hundred years in the past. At some point since then, he was upgraded to Tier-2 sapience to be introduced to several new advanced functions, including tactical prediction and e-warfare capabilities, and given a physical surrogate form with a complementary hard-light axe for the convenience of one captain, before eventually being changed over to the servitude of the vessel's latest captain: a venturous sorcerer named Ozark Dhrystone.
Through the slow but steady success of his new master's enterprise, SEPTEMBER received even more upgrades - including a very intensive upgrade to full Tier-1 sapience, meaning he is now legally recognized as a person albeit with some limitations. Despite many upgrades, the mix of state-of-the-art and ancient technology has left him with a myriad of strange technical quirks, such as nodes in his core cluster randomly crashing and a slow, hitchy speech pattern. His prime directive is assisting Ozark in running and protecting the ship and crew.
I swear to god I will pistol whip anyone who mentions "21st night of September" in the comments :P
SEPTEMBER originally started out as a D&D warforged barbarian who I gave a roleplay quirk where he would 'crash' if a natural 1 was rolled (which happened far more often than I cared to admit) and play the Windows XP shutdown and startup chimes when it happened. I still use him as a warforged barbarian in Dungeons and Dragons, but now he'll become a part of Ozark's crew, fulfilling certain functions around the ship and, using a surrogate, help defend against any assailants. Now, don't take that fancy war axe for a simple toy; that bad boy can cleave through a solid block of forged battleship-grade steel like a butcher's knife through paper mache.

SEPTEMBER, a few loose screws short of being an Iron Man, belongs to me! :D
