hmmm good question (really)

could be because
1: they are cute
2: the animation is very good
3: when they make fun of themselves you can't help but laugh
4: they depict a good strong female rollmodel

but really i am just guessing

In case that didn't answer your question, it's because there's a new incarnation of the series as of like October or November of last year. It's called My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and is headed by Lauren Faust who worked on Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and The Powerpuff Girls... and since she's so good at what she does, there are fans waaaay outside of the 6 year old girl demographic. Screenshots with captions as a meme really took off on 4chan and it prompted a lot of people to watch the show and actually like it.
