Here is my half of a trade with
cooper She asked me to draw her character Jacent Valor. I got an idea of him sitting down bathed in candle light, so I did that. I also added a detailed background and foreground so now my fingers are hurting me.
I don't know how many hours I put into this - I guess around six hours. Much of that time was figuring out how to draw his pose and doing some concepts for the lamps - in this case, I settled with magickal candles handing upside down that drip upwards.
The two staffs are based of my Voodoo wand designs I got in another gallery (http://www.fantasyartists.org/Gal337_Fantasy_Voodoo_Priestess_Concepts.asp). The mask on the right is of an emblem design from my Imperial Destiny universe. The pocket watch design is copied from a pocket watch I own. The arcane looking text on the paper are random shapes and strokes, but I did add some text smileys as a little joke.
Jacent Valor © Cooper. Drawn and coloured in Open Canvas 1.1.

This is a beautiful image.
It is kind of hard to explain properly but I always like images that make anthropomorphic characters seem more believable. There are plenty of images out there with characters interacting with their environment, but only a few of them really grab hold of my attention like this one.

Okay, seriously, OpenCanvas? No, you've got to be kidding me.
This image is excellent. It's soft, colorful, portrays a nice adventurous atmosphere with a reasonable focus on the main character, but not overshadowing the background detail.
The figure in the chair literally emits 'character'. Though it's actually a male, it leaves an impression of an old and wise bard lady of aristocratic blood that used to travel a lot in her time and gained quite some lore and artifacts from it. The shaggy gray-white hair and the pose add up to that image as well.
The only flaw i find in this is the cup on the table and the dark area left of the sofa. The cup is too small in comparison to the proportions of the table, scrolls and the book, and the dark area is... too dark, as if the sofa was completely blocking the light from the fireplace.
If i'd draw a 3 dimensional line from the right edge of the fireplace and the right edge of the sofa, i'd see that there was supposed to be that narrow 'alley' of dimmed light, which would introduce a spectre of soft shadows to the sides of it, and would reduce the contrast on the edges of the left (viewers P.O.V) wing.
I'm glad i'm watching you.

I can provide you with the Open Canvas WPE event file if you don't believe me.
I had a hard time figuring out the shadows, and I know I made mistakes, but it was all good practice.
I can see that an alley of light would look fine as you described it, it didn't occur to me when I was drawing and colouring the work.

Nonetheless you did a very good job, practice or not.
Nah, i believe you *smiles*. Not too many people can make oC drawings not look nor feel like oC drawings, and i see i'm not the first person to say that to you.
I'd be grateful if you would provide me with the file, as it's a rare opportunity to see artwork done in progress.
