I understand this image to be about our inner child, not our past selves. It's a valuable lesson and warning, to not let adulthood overwhelm our ability to enjoy the simpler things, be they a toy, a game, or a bit of potty humor.

Don't suppress or neglect your inner child.

From someone who had to grow up fast to take care of there mother during and after my parents devorce while going into my teens among many other things. This does hit home.
