Writers love to talk about the moment when characters start writing themselves, but when you're doing a comic strip you also have the opportunity to start playing with the formal "call and response" pattern of the strip itself. Which is way more fun, because it's like jazz, trying to see how much you can distort the form of the strip without losing the essence of it.
