Polly Craus - Fencing Champion - a true story
For anyone following me, you will know of my love for history. Back when I was teaching fencing, I realized much of fencing history was fast disappearing, so I began contacting 'old' fencers and doing interviews with them over the phone. I would then write articles for a local fencing magazine.
This was a good introduction to writing for me, and I would suggest it to anyone just breaking into writing. *smiles... yes I spent time cleaning this one up a bit.
This is the article from 1998. It is a true story, and quite fascinating, even if you are not a fencer. As in all things, you will see how politics rules in sports. I know, as I ran into some of it during these times. Recently, I have discovered a fencing salle near my home, and so will be returning to the sport after many years absent. Speaking with the owners of the salle, I found that the political problems are still prevalent, if not worse.
Enjoy,
Vix

" I realized much of fencing history was fast disappearing"
A valid concern. All that, and yet the top search result for Polly is a tiny, two sentence Wikipedia page. Fortunately, some fella at the Texas State Historical Association saw fit to give her a proper article.
You're helping keep the lady's memory alive as well. This story shows up as the ninth entry for her on Google...

Fascinating. Living history about things we'll never know the intimacies of again.
I've seen the sport, but not from the competitor's POV -- especially the politics.
Oddly, I remember the word balestra from a swashbuckler video game, where one learned it as a fighting move and had to perform button sequences to execute.
