An unpleasant past.
Mark never asked about Madeline's past, although to be honest he did ask - but the woman always said that "it wasn't worth it".
In the end, Mark understood what it was about, only when one day he heard an angry scream.
His always calm and balanced wife with a terrible frown on her face, screamed at the older frightened woman on the threshold of their house.

Elvira Madlax... But the real name is Eleonora Kaminski. Sometimes she can introduce herself using her "official" husband's surname - Eleonora Madlax.
But she really got used to being an Elvira Madlax for all her friends with benefits and her endless lovers.
Madeline had some pretty weird parents. Her mother once left her for a long time with her father while she found a new man and disappeared.
In the end, Madeline doesn't even know if Mr. Madlax, a former CDF sergeant was even her real father...
Elvira returned only when she became older and no longer interesting to other men.
That's why Madeline has a huge point on her marriage and her large family, and very zealously protects them, looking for threats even where there are none.
But being smart she always listens when Mark clearly talks with her, calming her down after another scene of jealous.

I can't even say that her official parents didn't love her. Her official father, older Mr. Madlax tried to find a common language with his daughter, although, having a rather strict character, he was not too well suited to raising children.
Her mother Elvira - also loved her daughter and even tried to raise her, but her lifestyle...
According to Madeline, her mother Elvira was "a simple and probably not very smart person."
Elvira lived off her bright looks and had no problem with male attention, so she just lived with her next boyfriend while he provided for her. In the end, he either dumped her or she found another man who provided for her needs.
Many years later, when she became older and uninteresting for men, she tried to return home.
But Madeline has already grown up and gone her own way, and her official husband ...let's say, he no longer expected her return - so after many years, Elvira will appear at Mark's and Madeline's house with an unexpected visit.

One very experienced man told me that I should at least explain what happened in the past, that Madeline is so zealous in protecting her family, she wanted to have so many children, and she also occasionally can give a scene of jealousy for her husband.
