After drawing so many kitsune it seems to have rubbed off on me...
Just a little self indulgent self-TF that crossed my mind the morning after I finished the kitsune ref sheet and I just felt like I had to draw it.

I mean eventually I'll have to get groceries... and plus changing back would merely be temporary. Also, when I used to draw myself as a fox before I started using one of my original species I always went with a red. The arctic thing is definitely you rubbing off on me.
Amusing thing about trying to draw myself though is that I initially drew my hair part on the wrong side since I only ever see it in the mirror.

I'll be honest, I haven't decided yet. They definitely are during their feral stage, but I'm not sure once they grow their second tail. Like it would make sense if they still kept that aspect, but at the same time my father is Red-Green colorblind and based on his experiences I would kind of feel bad having them suffer the same fate. On the other hand, it does potentially open up some interesting story telling possibilities in regards to sensory differences and gives them another trait that differentiates them from humans.
Not a ton really. The biggest issue tends to be the user interface of electronics that don't take it into account. Like items with batteries that use different colors in the same light to indicate charging versus charged changing from red to green. He doesn't play games, but I am sure he'd have issues there as a lot use red and green to indicate character hostility and the like. One thing I know he had specific trouble with were the stop lights in Quebec when he visited. Normally, he can't differentiate the colors of the stop lights, but knows the difference between a red and green light by their placement. In Quebec the lights are positioned horizontally and he had no idea.
I think the main thing that is just that he misses the vibrancy of the world and so there are certain things that everyone looks in amazement at the colors and he just sees a muck of browns and greys. Like fireworks are one in particular that he has mentioned not really finding joy in. I know that he's has had a pair of I believe they were these https://enchroma.com/ in the past and he said they really did work, but then he lost/broke them and never had them when he needed them so I don't think he's gotten a replacement.

That makes sense, thanks, and yes it must be strange to wonder how other people perceive the world and what you're missing. I've heard of those Enchroma glasses before and I don't understand how they could possibly function as advertised but apparently they do! Hhhhhmmmm, on reading that also a certain type of those glasses also has an effect on standard colour vision, interesting.
I never actually got a chance to look through them so I couldn't tell you want to looks like or how they could possibly work. I do know my dad said they worked best with very vibrant lighting. Mostly full sunlight is where it really stood out.
Also since we are talking about foxes and vision do your kitsune also have the other downsides of fox vision such as near-sightedness and lower resolution vision? Or is the lack of color enough torture for Jake?

I see, thanks!
And hhhhmmm well Jake doesn't consider it torture so much as an inconvenience, and I've heard different things about the acuity of vulpine vision so I'm not certain how to approach that. I did mention in one story that Kitsunes have fovea's in their eyes, which ordinary foxes lack, so they can read, which is of course really important! I didn't know about the lower-resolution vision, interesting.
I suspect that for Kitsunes vision is not as important as it is for humans, and scent and hearing moreso, something I haven't really covered in Jake's story. I think it's a fun idea that a human to feral Kitsune would be walking around with a permanent reminder of their new body in the form of the muzzle and whiskers in their vision, that would be just another odd thing in a number of odd things. Humans and Foxes / Kitsunes really are very different in form when you consider it...not to mention the whole four-legged thing...

Yes, having to adjust to a completely new set of senses along with form and locomotion would be entirely disorienting. But these are the fun aspects to theorize about TF stories and most people don't really cover them so I'm glad you are.
Also, I have decided to make my kitsune red-green colorblind, though they do lack the other vision disadvantages. That first hundred years they still have standard fox vision and it is one of those things that adjusts when they get their second tail. It would probably be a more gradual thing as they develop as some of their senses such as smell and hearing adjust downwards in sensitivity and vision capabilities increase. I wish I had saved where it was, but I do remember reading some information about total cognitive processing abilities when it comes to senses and so I try and slightly keep that in mind.
Though since they do having shapeshifting capabilities I have been considering the repercussions of what that would mean, especially for the more skilled ones who can change individual parts of their bodies. Like in theory they would be able to purely shapeshift their eyes in order to adapt them to specific circumstances. It is an interesting theoretical concept as they would be able to increase their visible spectrum into ultraviolet fields on a whim and then suddenly have their brain process that new never before seen information. My gut tells me that each new form probably requires training and adjustment in order to not overwhelm the mind, but it is something that I'll have to consider.

It's interesting to think about, though I certainly don't know enough on the issue as I should. I actually have a book sitting near me, The Red Fox by H.G. Lloyd, which I'm slowly reading when I get the chance.
That makes sense and also a good point which I hadn't considered re cognitive capacity.
Shapeshifting definitely complicates things, especially when biology based!

Ooo… I’ve never heard of that book. Looks useful. Usually I’m just accumulating fox knowledge from lots of internet searches and youtube videos.
I’d have yo track it down, bit it was essentially saying that humans ended up reducing the amount of brainpower spent on sensory information for increased overall intelligence so actually increasing our sensory input to animalistic levels would actually cause us to either not process that level of information or reduce our other brain processes to handle it. Personally I do like playing with it a bit because it’s just kind of fun to have slightly more animalistic levels of senses while keeping human intelligence.
And yes, this is another magic makes stuff complicated when it comes to the shapeshifting aspect.
