Uh oh! It ain't furry! Well, unless you count the 19th century facial hair.

The Dwarves, by reputation, have always been an industrious and tough race. A millennia and a half ago they emerged the sole survivors in a brutal war of extinction between the Gnomes, Goblins, and Dwarves. Since then they have settled and secured Ilfand, the lush and lofty confederacy of Dwarven cultures forming Sejhat's northeast quadrant.
After generations of rapid technological advancement, however, the traditionally poor Lowland clans united into a single, powerful kingdom powered by industry, commerce, and science. In their attempts to expand the benefits of industrialized society to their brethren the Lowlanders ran afoul of their Highland kin, a people steeped in tradition and ritual. The Dwarves grew further apart, then clashed in civil war to determine the fate of Dwarven society.
The war has continued intermittently for 50 years, and has fallen into a brutal pattern of attack, reprisal, and stalemate that has consumed fortunes and lives on a terrible scale. The Highlands and Lowlands alike grow weary, poor, and weak, but both factions know that one way or another the war must end soon, for a great shift is in the air and a disjointed, weakened Dwarven race will be flattened by it if they do not find peace.

They're a little taller than most fantasy Dwarves, but not much. They still have to deal with their limitations in terms of mobility, but they make up for that somewhat with their toughness. In modern combat the Dwarves, especially the Lowlanders, favor firepower over mobility. Each foot soldier is well trained in their musket, and many muskets, like the double-barreled model above, offer more firepower per individual than other armies.
In the Highlands, yes. The Highlanders, though culturally similar to the Scottish Highlanders, are quite a bit wealthier thanks to their mining complexes. The Lowlanders use more elaborate earthworks and above ground fortresses as a consequence of their geography. Either way, their forts are formidable, and both use cannons.
Heh, the Dwarves' innate lack of ability to run quickly or for long distances has factored into their modern tactics. While they do have cavalry for tactical mobility their strength is in their combat discipline and firepower. Besides, why walk for an hour when a cannonball can make the trip in 4 seconds?
Gah, why do they have the bayonets above the barrel? Only the French did that and see where that got ém! It gets in the way when aiming and it is harder to brace the weapon in defence since the weight of for example a stampeding horse getting impaled on the bayonet will force the weapon down to the ground if not held in a very curved angle!
The bayonet is at an offset angle not directly in the path of the gun sights (which are present since this musket is modified for use by the Light Infantry), and on top of that the Dwarves are short- having a bayonet upward of the weapon is a good idea unless you're trying to stab all of your enemies in the knees and ankles.
Besides that the French Charleville 1777 was a fine musket that did fine service. With it the French swept aside most of continental Europe, and a good bit of Russia for a moment. True, they got kicked back, but it's arguable that some of Napoleon's critical early victories, the foundation of his career, were built upon that musket and the barefoot rascals shooting it.

I'm tryin' to shake a few of you suckas up!
Seriously, though, I can appreciate that the mental image of what a Dwarf should be is a powerful one- it's hard to break with what people expect. Knowing this, I'm fairly happy with how this picture came out. His clothing is radically different, but I think folks can kind of imagine a Dwarf adopting that kind of facial hair and carrying around that kind of firepower.

Hehe, you defenitly did^^
Oh, and I really like that style, it's pretty cool to see another interpretation like the "chainmalwearing-axewhieldingwarriortype" or this silly stuff with lots of leather and spikes^^
And may I ask you, what reference ypu took for the hat? Looks liek some kind of bicorne, but an uncommon kind.

There is something warpedly appropriate in seeing a fantasy Dwarf clad in a napoleonic styled uniform, complete with big hat XD A tad more lean then most depictions I've seen of dwarves, but I can still see the physiological differances in this guy that makes it quite clear that he's a dwarf and not just a thickly built human. Very nice.
