Whatever they want! One's shape and form should never preclude them from their prior relationships with friends and family. They're still the same people underneath the claws and scales.
They just need to get an audience with their old friends back home and explain what happened. If those people turn their backs on them, then they aren't worth being called their friends.
Heck, it's not like they've been rendered unfit for participating in society either -- they're still perfectly functional humanoids! They may even be able to take on employment in areas of expertise that would never have even been considered before, given their smaller frame and improved balance. Being able to get into tight spaces makes them ideal for pest control, roof insulation and rescuing pets that have gotten themselves stuck down in had-to-reach places.
