Due to the lack of written records, little but physical evidence and oral histories remain of the wandering tribes that would become the Underground Empire. It's known that the Noxfolk people originated far to the north and migrated south during the cooling period after the end of the First Athropocene Epoch, however.
While other people in the region would require heavy clothing to stave off the cold, Noxfolk populations would dress primarily for practicality and modesty, with a variety of loincloths and backpacks found exhibiting trinkets, tribal allegiances, or other decorations. Sandals were simple braids of grass with a thin layer of wood for protection, and were often replaced. Masks serving as cultural signifies and protection were exceedingly common.
It's posited that the tradition of face concealment began in this era. As contact between Noxfolk and other lines of humanity became more commonplace, the mask served as a temporary buffer between initial meeting and the effects of the psychically induced hallucinations. This, along with Noxfolk sensitivity to UV and heat, slowed cross-xenotype tribes as the Noxfolk developed a more vespertinal to nocturnal schedule.
Tools and weaponry were limited to simple wood and stone implements, with Brick exhibiting the uncommon Flint Knife. Spears made of sharpened and hardened wood were far more common, but the flint knife was held in high regard as both a weapon and a tool, particularly among those were able to harness psychic abilities tuned to combat.
