So, this is a little critter design I had for a few years now, and one that I'd consider a bit of a comfort one. I don't really have a name for them even after all of this time, rather just nicknaming them 'shadow creatures' due to their preference of habitat.
They reside in areas that have very little to no light, and the only thing that really can give away their presence in said areas are their eyes, which have a soft, gray-white glow to them. Any bright lights will cause them to scatter to find dark spots again, more so as the substance they're made of will start evaporating in said conditions. They move in ways that no creature reasonably would, even as they get closer to whatever it is that has their attention. Unnerving to most, but the reality is...they're just curious of anything that interests them, and they're also slime-based, hence the movements they could do.
Also really friendly to boot, a far cry from their initial appearance and actions. Contact with them would show that they're mildly damp, even having a short layer of 'fur' as well, and even a sense of calm will follow after if in contact with uncovered parts of the body. The substance can come off of them onto others, but it'll leave no trace as it quickly evaporates, the sense of calm being something the creatures kind of exploit as they make for surprisingly good huggers. They are also rather voracious, as they are likely to devour those they hold on to after a little while. Despite such, there is no threat or danger to the ingested, especially so since the 'stomach' that one is kept in has no digestive capabilities. Said 'organ' also doubles as a form of 'lung', so running out of air isn't a risk as well, and coupled with the calming sense being in constant effect makes a stay within the creatures a welcome one for relaxation.
Despite how friendly they are, they're easily startled to any loud sounds or sudden actions. Something as simple as a jack-in-a-box will make them either curl up defensively or scurry away, all the while their arms flailing behind them.
Being slime-based, they can also change their body proportions if needed by simply shifting the mass they have from one part of their bodies to wherever it is needed. The tail that the one here has is a common trait of them, but they can change it at will to either be even longer, stubby, or having no tail at all. The substance they're made of is also of the self-generating kind albeit slow, so over time they can have larger forms - and thus more mass - to themselves, whereas lights will make them lose their mass and thus size.
Honestly glad to finally get some form of visual of them, and this might compel me to make a model of them later to further aid in it.

Method of closeness rather, though its more that they like the feeling of having something within their gut. And they can be a little silly with it too, so it's often that one would stuff themselves to immobility. They may be rather strong for their kind, but even they could wind up having too much to carry.
The average they tend to be is around eight to ten feet in standing height. However, given how they can lose size from bright lights, it isn't too uncommon for some to be the size of one's hand, and for how big they can get...lets say that if some have resided in caverns for a loooong time, they can be pretty huge. Sure they'd have to sacrifice their 'condensed' form, but it does let them have minimal issues getting around.
So, a range of pocket sized to unending eldritch abomination who just wants to love. Gotcha! Sounds like they'd more like to end up inside of someone else, really, since I doubt much light makes it in there, so I can imagine they may stay in a friend instead if need be!
Still, it would technically mean that sense of calm would continue persisting in that case, since it is pretty much in contact with 'em at all times.
And they may or may not end up growing just a tiny bit in the absolute darkness, so I can see them being very useful for that purpose! For limited times, at least. Might end up immobile yourself if you keep one around for quite a while, and they'll probably be too happy to remember to slink back out
