Original Species: A Collection of Sea Critters
The Ceanita, the Shoalpod, and the Silver Squid are all species of small, ocean-dwelling critters that provide the basis for the vast marine food web of the fantasy oceans.
Ceanitas are small fish, roughly analogous to Earth's sardines. They roam the ocean in vast shoals, feeding on plankton, and doing their best to avoid being eaten by larger sea creatures. Once a year billions of these fish gather along the edges of a massive blue hole known as "The Crown of the Northern Abyss" to spawn. The jagged coast around "the Crown" is littered with cracks and crevasses that provide the fry with excellent hiding spots.
Shoalpods are marine arthropods, whose ancestors resembled Earth's Silverfish. Similar to the Ceatinas, they travel in massive shoals and feed on plankton, in particular, phytoplankton. They appear in particularly large amounts whenever the appearance of algal blooms is imminent. These little creatures effectively serve as the ocean's cleanup crew, keeping floating algae in check.
Silver Squids are small cephalopods that feed on shrimp and small fish. For most of the year, they travel on small shoals, using coordinated color changes to confuse potential attackers. However, once a year, much like the Ceatinas, they gather in massive groups to spawn. Unlike the aforementioned fish, they have multiple designated spawning grounds, all around the world. One can easily find their spawning grounds, as the waters around these areas glimmer with silvery sparkles as each individual cephalopod passes by.
