the portalkeeper — drakes are not given their own names, but are rather referred to by the role they serve — unofficially ascended the ranks of the draconic hierarchy following the fall of the smoke dragon's kingdom. with no one to rule over it, he decided he'd take it for his own and "become a dragon" himself.

drakes cannot actually become dragons, obviously, since they're not the same thing; however, drakes are capable of many things, and "ascension" is one of them. this entails claiming a dragon's land and seeing yourself as its true ruler, among other things. the knight, the drake who actually wiped out the smoke dragon's kingdom, did not claim dragonhood. this left an opening for the portalkeeper to become a dragon.

of course, the born dragons have a lot of things to say about that. they are very particular about everyone fitting into their hierarchy the intended way.
