The mysterious artifact known as the Eye of the Guardians has a long and storied history, passed down through the ages from one worthy female feline to the next, to uphold truth and justice and to battle evil.
As it passes from hand to hand, it records the personality of its former users, who can manifest as shades to guide and assist their successor. These ghostly figures are known as The Greymalkins.
Here is a sampling of some of the more prominent Bearers of the Eye, as they appeared in life, a long line leading up to its current bearer, the superheroine known as Catseye, who's one of the most skilled users of the Eye's power in history.
These ladies recently appeared in a more ephemeral form assisting their sister from the 1940's, Dorothy Pearl, in an illustration I've done for a Pulp fiction serial being graciously published at Spontoon Island, which can be seen here: http://spontoon.rootoon.com/SPwSt01.html
Stop in and check it out, if you would, and while you're there look around at some of the other neat stuff that's there.

As time goes by, yeah, although I'm kinda running out of scraps from my concept work that aren't spoilers. There may even be stories about some of these historical felines in the offing someday. You can check out a bit of history in the adventures of Dorothy Pearl at the link.
For now though, I'm working on just getting the foreground going on the Free Rangers, let alone the background.

Long story short, most of the cats in the world of the Free Rangers are mildly psychic.
The Eye of the Guardians acts as a lens that focus' the powers of those felines who have great psychic potential combined with a true heart and a desire to see justice done. The powers it bestows depend on the intrinsic talents of the bearer, from invisibility to prophecy, from creating illusions to teleportation.
In addition to the Greymalkins, the Eye has a special guardian spirit known as the Servitor of the Eye, who's responsibility it is to see the artifact passed on to the next worthy feline when its prior bearer dies or relinquishes it.

Yeah. I'm still mulling whether there are any appreciable gaps in the timeline or not. Seems logical, as the Eye is pretty much responsible for finding its next bearer. Either way, these gals are just a subset of a much larger lineage.
(BTW, you probably knew this already but I'll clarify 'cos I'm , but Dame is Beatrice Cheshire Liddell's title. It's the female equivalent of the knightly designation of Sir. In the same vein, Goody is short for Goodwife, which is kind of a medieval take on Mrs.)
