Made a 8x8 pixel (this was pretty high res, might want to do 4x4 or 2x2 instead) image which was half black and half transparent.
Defined a pattern of that image.
Back in the actualy pic I made a new layer and filled it with that pattern.
Lowered the new layers opacity til I liked it.
