Pokémon Adopts explanation 1
In September I'll be doing pokémon adopts (among other things). Just bear with me, mice don't have tear ducts between their nose and their eyes.
The TF drive WAS very emotional for me. While it's good to get a lot of that "out there", some things were a bit painful to unearth.
The poll being referred back to is the one I did in June.
I'm oversimplifying a bit with the use of the copyright symbol. The © means "all rights reserved"; however the gift only transfers some rights (i.e. distribution/reposting and derivation/coloring rights, but not attribution/authorship rights) so it's not the same "kind" of ownership as ownership over a character.
The flowchart is pretty much what I'm going to explain in part 2, but feel free to ask about it if you can read it (or about any panel really).

Are you alright? You're crying your eyes out *offer comforting pats and hugs*
I've gotten couple of adopts. Given that I'm in the camp and understanding; the exact terms and conditions are written so that both parties must agree + common copy- /fair use- rights can still apply - but I'll wait before saying anything else

yeah, it's just the aftermath of the TF drive. A lot of bad memories stirred up through it (and not just the ones shown...)
The problem is precisely the opposite: the pokémon characters I came up with, I only decided to turn into adopts after the fact. So I'm having to set terms and conditions now

That's understable - no need to re-open any wounds here
I would say that have a look at how other adopters set their terms, plenty of those to be found here in FA browser -> Category -> down on the list: other stuff & adaptables
In general if you are the sole creator and owner of the art & characters = you hold all the rights. You have all the power to give those rights away full-or-partially.
Also my understanding with the exact wording was "This Sketch is a gift" = the given rights are only for the created Art. Not the character's rights - but you can make new promise and terms with the character's right as you see fit. Exact clarifycation should clear the air, I think
I'm still might be fuzzy on the details here, but part 2 might tell that...
