A few days ago, Jacob received an anonymous message telling him to meet at a park, late at night. He was hesitant at first, but curiosity got the better of him; Alys would be long asleep by that time so he wouldn't have to worry about telling her.
Jacob arrived at the park and sat on the bench. He waited for a while, his mind was racing about what this meeting was about: who was it? Why did they want to meet? It wasn't long before he got his answer. He looked up and felt a chill go down his spine. It was Katie, his ex. The last time they met was the night before Jacob slept with Alys for the first time, since then, they had never spoken, not even to explain what happened.
"Hey, Jacob." Katie said as she stepped into the light of the lamp post. Jacob was silent, instead he just looked at the floor. Katie sat down on the bench next to him, "I didn't think you'd show." Jacob continued staring at the ground; at last, he spoke, taking a deep breath beforehand.
"If you're going to kill me just do it. You never were one to fuss around with contracts too much. 'Make it quick. Don't let them see you coming.' That's what you taught me." Jacob still didn't look at her, not even in her direction. "I know I'm long past the point an apology would do any good, not that it would in the first place, but... I am sorry for what I did to you."
Katie took a moment to respond, "Honestly, I'm not mad about what you did, I'm more mad at the fact you just up and left, not even a goodbye." Katie's voice quivered, the pain was audible, like she was about to cry. There was a brief silence, "Are you... Afraid of me, Jacob?"
Jacob pondered for a moment. He always kept his distance from Katie because he knew what she was capable of, she was a highly trained assassin and ex-military sniper. Jacob let out a breath. "I think... I'm more afraid of... what you could do, more than who you are. You've told me stories about you taking revenge on people, and I think, that's why I left without saying anything, because I didn't want to become one of those stories." Jacob finally turned to face Katie.
Katie had a face of guilt almost. "This profession, it's not for everyone, there's no doubting that. I had a feeling that what we had wouldn't last forever. So, in a way, I kind of saw what happened between us coming. But I never meant to scare you with those stories, I just wanted you to get an idea of what I've been through." It was now Katie that had trouble looking at Jacob, she stared at her hands and sighed.
"So, why did you call me here?"
"Earlier I asked you if you were afraid of me. And I guess you were more afraid of me coming after you than just bumping into me on the street, which is what I assumed." Katie pause for a moment, "I called you here to tell you... You don't need to be afraid." Jacob looked at her confused, "I'm not going to kill you." Jacob felt like a large weight had been lifted off him, like a wave of relief.
"Sounds like you forgive me." Jacobs says with a small smile on his face.
"Yeah... I guess I do." They both chuckled a bit before Katie stood up. "Well, it's getting late, I'm sure your girl's wondering where you are. I'm glad we got to straighten things out." As Katie began walking, Jacob shouted to her.
"Kate! Why don't you come by the club sometime for a drink?" Katie froze up, surprised by the fact Jacob would want to see her again.
"Sure, why not?" She said before disappearing into the night.
I decided to put together a short story to sort of wrap up what ever I had going with Katie and Jacob as they used to be together before I introduced Alys into the mix. Not sure if I'll do more of these for my other characters but this was kind of done in case I wanted to make content with Katie and Jacob again.
